Candid wedding photos at Hotel Trois Tilleuls

They wanted candid wedding photos

One of the first things Tiana and Yannick told me when we video-chatted about their wedding plans was that Yannick didn’t like getting his picture taken and that they wanted the cameras out of their faces!

Seems like a funny thing to say to a photographer, but I totally got it! Tiana and Yannick were looking for a wedding photographer that would keep a low profile, take candid photos and let them have fun.

You’d be surprised how many of my clients express the same concern. Whether it’s the discomfort of having to stare down a camera lens, the belief that they’re not photogenic or just the desire to enjoy their wedding day without spending hours posing for a camera– a lot of people are now looking for documentary-style photographers. Wedding couples want a photographer that can be more discreet and will capture the wedding day as it plays out. Which is exactly what I love doing best!

When Tiana and Yannick talked about their wedding, what really stood out was the fun they were going to have and the emotional moments they were expecting with their parents and close friends.

So when their wedding day arrived, while we did end up taking very rapid-fire group portraits and oh-so-brief bride and groom portraits right after the ceremony, the photography for the rest of the day was completely unscripted and moment-driven.

Hotel Trois Tilleuls wedding

The wedding was held at the Hotel Trois Tilleuls, a gorgeous venue along the Richelieu river, south of Montreal. The wedding ceremony took place inside the simple A-frame wedding chapel on the hotel grounds.

Their wedding style was (according to them and with a wink): “West Hampton, classic, vintage, quasi-hipster”. Whatever it was, I loved it!

A gloriously fun and nerdy wedding

Tiana is a music therapist with a background in voice and theatre and Yannick has a PhD in neuroscience. They managed to incorporate so many quirky references in their wedding, from Game of Thrones to Le Petit Prince to The Princess Bride to Sock Monkey Mascots. My nerdy self ate it up! And what I loved even more than all the fun winks was that they fully committed to soaking up the moments and enjoying the heck out of their wedding.

Here’s the bride and groom’s take on the experience:

“We were not big into lots of posed photos, and Esther respected that, quickly understood our style and got lots of candid, fun, honest and beautiful shots, and making the posed photos we did do fun and easy.” – T&Y
